Carl G. Jung’s theory of personality types is considered one of the fundamental theories concerning modern personality psychology. It is based on the idea that people differ in their ways of perceiving the world and making decisions. Jung not only divided people into two basic groups: extroverts and introverts, but also distinguished four basic mental functions, divided into two pairs: cognitive functions (perception and intuition) and decision-making functions (thinking and feeling). Jung’s theory assumes that each person has one dominant function and an accompanying secondary function that define how they think, feel and act. Combined with a predominance of extraversion or introversion, this can give as many as eight different personality types.
